Born in Pollone, in the province of Biella, on January 17, 1840 and died in Turin on January 13, 1908. After completing his studies at the college of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, in 1854 he enrolled at the Accademia Albertina in Turin where he attended the courses of Enrico Gamba, Carlo Arieti and Andrea Gastaldi, graduating in 1862. He made his debut in 1855 at the Promotrice of Turin presenting a watercolor, Testa di vecchio, where he affirmed himself in 1860 with An episode of the siege of Ancona. First interested in historical and costume painting, which he presented at various national and foreign periodic exhibitions until 1880 (in Vienna in 1873, at the Paris Salon in 1874 and in 1878, in Turin in 1880), he later decided to devote himself entirely to painting of pure landscape, which he paints almost exclusively on small panels, drawing inspiration above all from the places he was familiar with in the Piedmont area: Turin, where he spends long winter stops to work on larger canvases, the countryside of Biella and Pollone, together with Genoa, Rome and Venice, where he spends spring and summer, and finally his frequent stays in Miradolo, a guest of the Counts Cacherano di Bricherasio and Countess Sofia, the favorite among his many pupils. He also stayed abroad: in Paris and Bern (1878), in Holland (1883) and in Switzerland (1892). He frequently exhibits at major exhibitions in Italy and abroad: in Piedmont, Lombardy, Liguria and then in Venice, Rome, Paris, Holland, Germany and Switzerland. At the Turin Promoter of 1884 In montibus sanctis (1883) it was purchased by King Umberto I (now in a private collection, Billa) and Ombre secolari (1884) was chosen to be destined for the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, where it also converges Alto Biellese, exhibited in Venice in 1887. In 1907 over thirty tables appear at the seventh Venice Biennale, where a personal room is set up. He died in Turin on November 13, 1908. Still in 1952 the Venice Biennale presented a group of twenty-four works by him as part of the «Exhibition of Piedmontese 19th century landscape painters».
