Born in Milan on February 22, 1851, died in the same city on December 21, 1923. He studied at the Polytechnic of his city and obtained a degree in engineering there, but irresistibly attracted to art, he lived and worked to perfect himself in painting. He was his teacher Sebastiano De Albertis, of whom he learned the safe technique. However, he did not belong to any school, and painted, with personal strength and vividness, landscapes, figures and portraits, which led him to one of the first places in the painting of his time. In 1880 he exhibited Testina di paggio in Milan; A portrait; Beggar; in 1881, also in Milan: Along the Naviglio; Portrait of a lady; Study from life; in 1883, in Rome: Portrait of the Count Gualdo and Half figure, and in Milan, two portraits; in Turin, in 1884, Portrait of the painter Pompeo Mariani and two other portraits; in Venice, in 1887, Mestizia. One of his best paintings, the Portrait of the Mother, was exhibited in Paris in 1889; and with this same painting in 1892 he obtained a gold medal at the Munich Exposition. At the 1892 National Exhibition with Brianza Landscapes he obtained another gold medal. He exhibited again at the exhibition in the Palazzo della Permanente in Milan in December 1902, and in January 1903 and April 1920 he held solo exhibitions at the Pesaro Gallery. With his subjects of Navigli and washerwomen he had obtained a silver medal in Paris at the 1900 World Exhibition; in 1901 another gold in Munich; and in 1915 he had participated in the San Francisco International Exposition with the painting Near the bridge. He was one of the first, with Segantini, to share the honor of the invitation to the Carnegie International Show in Pittsburg, as he had it for all foreign exhibitions. He was a great and strong artist, truly personal in his subjects, in his technique. His pictorial lyricism is contrary to intellectual and sentimental intrusions. Averted by romanticism and all the artists who followed him, he was a real himself. Renato Simoni said of him: «As a painter and not as a philosopher he solves the problems that fascinate and disturb him. There is music in his painting. We must listen to him ». In December 1929 a posthumous exhibition was held in a Milanese gallery where about fifty works were collected, all belonging to private collectors. We remember: Naviglio, in the collection of the Hon. S. A. Benni; another Naviglio, belonging to dr. Giovanni Rasini; Marina di Alessio, in the collection of Gustavo Botta; First thaw, in that of comm. L. Puricelli; Rosetta and Alta Brianza, property of Count Venier; Red figurine, in the collection of rag. C. Peroni; The street; The courtyard and Messo Naked, which belonged to the Hon. G. Gussoni. In addition to the National Gallery of Rome, paintings by him can be found in the International Art Gallery of Venice, in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, in the Mesday Museum in The Hague, in the Edison Palace in Milan and in many private collections. In the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Milan there are, beyond the said page head: Valloncello di Mondonico; Portrait of prof. Briansi; Laundresses; Beach in Alassio; Portrait of Luigi De Micheli.
