Born in Gorizia on February 28, 1828, died in Venice on September 10, 1903. He studied at the Accademia Veneta, a pupil of Lipparini, and first devoted himself to genre painting, of Venetian popular subjects. Abandoned for some time, he composed some paintings of historical and sacred subject, among which we remember: Tiziano instructs Irene di Spilimbergo, awarded by the Venetian Academy; The Samaritan treats the wounded; St. Paul on the road to Damascus fascinated by the apparition of Christ; Francesco I and Margherita of Valois; The dying Garibaldino; Episode of the Polish uprising. But in this kind of painting he proved rather cold, although the paintings were done with good technique. He then returned to his favorite subjects of his, and painted many pictures full of truth and grace, especially those depicting childhood. We mention: Chioggia boy wearing his first clerical habit, formerly the property of Prince Giovannelli; After the vigil of the Redeemer; The drunkard; Fallen Lion; Saltimbanco of the village; The cobbler; The hunter's family; Starfish; The sons of the fisherman; First illusions; It happened to us; Polishing makes a career; The Hunter's Little Daughter; The vegetable garden-lanella; The breakfast; The chicks; The bua; When che gera giovine (1893), the artist's last work; The fisherman with his niece and The little wound, owned by Mrs. Jole Graziani Rotta of Venice and exhibited in the latter city in 1932, at the Venice Biennale, on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition «Thirty years of Venetian life». Rotta, who spent most of his life in Venice, married a daughter of Lattanzio Querena; their son was Silvio Giulio Rotta.
