Born in Venice on 2 June 1841 and died in Paris on 31 December 1917. Son of the sculptor Pietro, he wrote at the age of fifteen at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, attending the classes of Callisto Zanotti, Francesco Carlo Astori and Michelangelo Grigoletti, then he attended the courses at the Milan Academy which he abandoned in 1860 to join Garibaldi in the enterprise of the Thousand. Two years later, after being arrested as a deserter near Polesella and locked up in the Rovigo prison, he finishes his studies in Brera and settles in Florence where he stays for five years. In this period he became friends with Diego Martelli and came into contact with the exponents of the Macchiaioli painting culture, Telemaco Signorini, Giovanni Fattori, Silvestro Lega, Cristiano Banti, Odoardo Borrani, Raffaello Sernesi, Cinvenzo Cabianca from Verona and the other frequenters of the Caffè Michelangiolo. In 1866 he enlisted again with Garibaldi for the Third War of Independence. In the following years (1866-1874) he moved between Florence and Venice, with some stay in Rome, until he decided to leave for Paris in 1874, the year of birth of Impressionism with the exhibition of the independents in the studio of the photographer Nadar. Starting from their fourth collective in 1879, he participated in the following years in the various Impressionist exhibitions, up to the eighth exhibition in 1886. In 1888 he was present in the Italian section of the Universal Exposition in Paris, and the following year he was awarded at the Salon. He regularly goes on vacation to the Chevreuse valley, where he paints landscapes en plein air. In 1893, and again in 1898 and 1903, he exhibited with enormous success in individual exhibitions at the Gallery of Durand-Ruel, which became his merchant. In 1914 an individual exhibition was set up for him at the Venice Biennale. He died in Paris in 1917. In 1922 an important posthumous exhibition was presented at the Pesaro Gallery in Milan with a large complex of works including oils, pastels and drawings (among other things, Before the procession, Al caffè, Alla toielette (The park, On stage, Woman undressing, In the countryside, Woman drying herself, Woman writing, Woman in the mirror, Woman resting, Woman sewing, The bunch of flowers). Several retrospectives followed, in Rome (1930 and 2006), in Milan (1930, 1943 and 1977), in Venice (1935 and 1952), in Turin (1965), in Paris (1967) and in Cortina d Ampezzo (1985-86). ).
