Born in Trieste on August 14, 1856, died in Venice, where he lived and carried out his entire activity, on May 18, 1922. Of humble origins (his father was a cook) after having worked as a carpenter, turner and blacksmith, at twenty years, remained unemployed, he enrolled in the Academy of Venice. He soon became a great friend of Giacomo Favretto and Ettore Tito, but his art was not affected by his spiritual and working community with them. He exhibited for the first time, in Turin, in 1880, a genre painting, A curious accident. From then on he brought to the public opinion: in 1882, in Milan, a Navy; in 1883, in Rome, I Nuts, today in Milan in the Angelici collection; in 1887, at the Venice Biennale, Silence, The lagoon, The evening and Fishermen's houses, which strongly attracted the attention of connoisseurs. In fact, in 1891 he received a first recognition with the assignment of the Prince Umberto prize for the Pace painting, which was purchased by King Umberto; another painting, D'inverno, was purchased for the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Rome. Then, at the Venice Biennale of 1895 he exhibited A greeting and sadness, which is currently in the Berlin Museum; to that of 1907, Calma crepuscolare and Al vento, preserved in the Gallery of Modern Art in Venice where there is also Piazza San Marco, exhibited at the Biennale in 1899 and La Chiesa della Salute. In 1901, the indefatigable painter exhibited Al mare, Torrente and Le rondini; in 1910, The Evening Bell, now in the Revoltella Museum in Trieste; and Scirocco, owned by Treves de 'Benfili; and in 1914 he won the Ussi competition. During the war, for a mortuary chapel on the Palgrande in Gamia, he painted a Madonna of the snow and, although he was sixty, he himself wanted to bring it to that tormented mountain. A trip to Constantinople in 1890 and another to Paris in 1899 did not influence his art. In 1924, two years after the artist's death, an exhibition of his works was ordered in Venice, and a hundred paintings were thus brought together, which demonstrated the fine activity of the modest Trieste painter; who, sincere and honest in life as in art, never departed from his favorite landscapes, which he portrayed with the love of a poet, rendering their silence, solitude and peace in a profound and exquisite way. In addition to the works already indicated, he is remembered: Afa, formerly royal property; The harmonies of silence, purchased by the Municipality of Florence; Poor Venice, in the Marzotto di Valdagno collection; Landscape, in the Turri one in Milan; Traghetto (1914) for the Gallery of Modern Art in Florence; Mountain village, Walnuts, Canale di Santa Maria, The vaporetto station. On the pier in San Marco, Valle di Cadore, Canale della Giudecca, Barca, Canale a Chioggia; Riposo, in the Gallery of Modern Art in Rome; Laguna (sketch), in that of Milan; In the lagoon, in the Delleani di Carignano collection; The canal of Santa Maria, in the Norsi canal of Turin.
